Afternoon tea is a very British tradition and a popular activity in Sidmouth.
The concept of afternoon tea originates from Ana, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. She began requesting a tray of tea, bread and butter, and cake to enjoy in her room during the late afternoon to quell her hunger until her evening meal at 8pm.
She began inviting friends to join her and gradually afternoon tea caught on becoming a fashionable habit among the social hostesses of the upper classes. By the late 19th century afternoon tea was an established daily routine.
Sadly, our busy 21st century lives no longer leave much time to take afternoon tea every day. However, on the upside, this means we can indulge occasionally and enjoy it as a special treat
The perfect afternoon tea menu should include sandwiches, light cakes, and scones served with jam and clotted cream (cream or jam first, it’s your preference!).
Traditional sandwich fillings are often cucumber, smoked salmon, coronation chicken or egg mayonnaise. They should always be served with the crusts cut off.
At Blinis, we serve afternoon tea every day between 3pm and 4.30pm. Our afternoon tea menu includes:
- Finger sandwiches – smoked salmon and cream cheese, cucumber
- A warm scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam
- A slice of cake from our selection
- A pot of tea or cup of coffee
